AU: Black Caffeine
They were friends.
Brothers who meant the world to each other.
Words, Smiles, Laughter, shared over coffee and smoke.
Now, those times felt so distant.
The once comfortable air around them now felt awkward and strained.
Coffee, no longer sweet, just bitter.
Smoke, no longer calming, just suffocating.
"Have you been well?" one man spoke, breaking the silence. He reached for his cup of coffee, his eyes focusing on the black liquid as he sipped. Cold coffee slithered down his throat with a burnt after-taste.
The other man looked up from the cigarette in between his fingers, his eyes looking slightly startled yet had a tint of hope. But when he noticed that his friend still refused to look at him, a frown formed on his lips. "Not really," he answered earnestly, his fingers lifting up the cigarette for another drag.
Smoke escaped his lips; it lethargically floated up before dissolving into the air.
A sarcastic laugh. “Is that so?”
"Shut up, Junhyung," Yoseob said flatly, his eyes now piercing into Junhyung’s. His knuckles was starkly white, contrasting the black cup he held tightly in his hand. He could feel the heat rising in his chest, the bile churning in his stomach, and the angry tears forming in his eyes. Slowly, he took small shallow breaths to calm his emotions and will the tears back. With an unbreaking gaze, Yoseob continued, "How about her? How is she?”
A pained expression spread across Junhyung’s face at the mention of her. She was the woman he loved, someone he unconsciously gave all of himself to. The woman who so happened to be his best friend’s first love. The woman whom he had chosen over his best friend. Guilt gnawed at his heart as he opened his mouth to speak, to explain, but there were no words. The pair of eyes he was looking into no longer had any sense of warmth. No forgiveness to be found.
What reflected in those dark irises was just hurt, cold anger, and bitterness.
"I would have chosen you over her, Junhyung," Yoseob said, averting his gaze to the window next to them. Rain spluttered upon on the glass as he whispered, "that’s how much of a friend you meant to me, but I guess it wasn’t the same for you."
"Yoseob-ah, I’m sorry. It went out of hand.. I-"
Yoseob shook his head. “The trust between us is broken. You already made your choice. There’s no way to fix this, Junhyung and I know you know it too.”
Tears began to pool in Junhyung’s eyes. The cold reality of losing a dear friend crashed into him like a tidal wave. Suddenly, he felt empty. There will no longer be late night bonding over action and horror films. There will no longer be nonsensical chatter over the phone. There will no longer be laughter, no more smiles shared over coffee and cigarettes. Nothing.
The deafening screech of a chair being pushed behind.
"I’m leaving. Goodbye," Yoseob whispered, a sad smile upon his lips before turning away.
In his blurry vision, Junhyung watched his best friend’s back as he walked away.
The sound of fading footsteps.
The chime at the door before it slams shut.
The word echoed in Junhyung’s mind like a broken tape. He leaned back into his seat, feeling as if life drained away from him.
Yoseob had walked out of his life.
He was gone.
There was nothing left.
Nothing but a cup of memories and an ashtray of black and grey.
